    Col. Putnam Jr. was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, having served first as the captain of the company in which he had enlisted, and afterward as an aide to his father, General Israel Putnam Sr. He was one of the Ohio Company of Associates and came to Marietta, Ohio in , and in was one of the company who began the settlement at.   Their 12 th child and 4 th son was the famous General Israel Putnam.       PUTNAM, RUFUS (), American soldier and pioneer, was born in Sutton, Massachusetts, on the 9th of April (O.S.). His grandfather was a half brother to Israel Putnam's father. He served in the French and Indian War in ; was a millwright in New Braintree in , during which time he studied surveying; and from until the War of Independence was a . Putnam did not have a direct connection to Ohio. His exploits, however, were well known by the settlers of the Connecticut Western Reserve in northern Ohio. Putnam County was named after this Revolutionary War hero. Israel Putnam was a cousin of Rufus Putnam, a pioneer settler in what would become the State of Ohio.

Hartford: Connecticut Historical Israel and Rufus book, Rufus Putnam (April 9, – ) was a colonial military officer during the French and Indian War, and a general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He was instrumental in the initial settling of the Ohio Country following the war.

Putnam was born in Sutton. Rufus Putnam, along with his cousin Israel Putnam and two others, traveled in to survey near present-day Pensacola, Florida. There, Putnam surveyed and chartered lands along the Mississippi River, which the Crown was going to grant to veterans of.
